| Membership in the European Community (EC) for Greece, Spain, and Portugal may reduce trade between the United States and the EC in selected commodities; prospects for a North American Common Market are not bright; and the diversion of agricultural crops from export to fuel alcohol production would very likely increase, rather than reduce, balance-of-payment deficits for the United States and Brazil. The first meeting of the Consortium on Trade Research, established by the Economics and Statistics Service's International Economics Division and several universities, focused on and continues to analyze these and other global topics. |

| Since turbulence is an important factor for the growth of microscopic algae, the effect of mixing intensity and mixing time, has been assessed by means of air-lift pumps as an alternative technology for the agitation of algal cultures. Batch culture experiments in enriched sea water were carried out indoors with <i>Chlorella</i> in 100 liter tanks and outdoors with natural phytoplankton populations in 70 m³ tanks. The respective culturing depths in these tanks were 25 and 180 cm. The role of the mixing was also evaluated against that of the pH regulation of the cultures. Não foi possível incriminar os vampiros como tendo algum papel significativo nas áreas estudadas. As características ecológicas dos locais de coletas dos morcegos vampiros foram examinadas e suas implicações na epidemiologia da raiva humana, discutidas. |

| Resumo Foram feitas análises do conteúdo estomacal e observações de estruturas do trato digestivo e dos rastros de Hypophihalmus edentatus, com o objetivo de determinar-se o regime alimentar e as possíveis adaptações morfológicas relacionadas a este regime. Os resultados obtidos indicam que a espécie é pelágica zooplanctófaga e seletiva para os maiores componentes do zooplancton. Verificou-se que o número de rastros aumenta com o crescimento mas o espaço entre eles permanece praticamente constante. |

| Recently, Professor Dr. Rudolf Fischer, Institut für Geologie und Paläontologie, Philipps-Universität, Marburg, F. R. Germany, submitted for identification some material of an Alpheid shrimp, which was found to be responsible for a considerable erosion of part of a rocky shore on the Pacific coast of Costa Rica. The species proved to be new to science, while also the rock-boring activities seem hitherto to be unknown for the Alpheidae, or, for that matter, for Decapod Crustacea as a whole. The new species proves to be closely related to Alpheus simus Guérin-Méneville from the Caribbean area, but it shows minor, but evidently constant differences. | This study compares the structure of E, V frontiers under several specifications of expected income and variance parameters with emphasis on fundamental differences in efficient crop mixes. The results are generated using data from a specific production region and a selected set of cropping activities for Wyoming. The risk-efficient frontiers and underlying crop mixes display sensitivity to alternative parameter definitions and suggest that if researchers intend to use the E, V approach in providing decision information to producers, care should be exercised in the choice of income and risk measures. |

| Several unknown animal forms have recently been collected in the immediate vicinity of hot hydrothermal vents in the Eastern Pacific Ocean, forming a flourishing community of organisms. A tubicolous polychaete builds parchment like tubes around some of the hydrothermal vents. The tubes are covered with particles of metallic sulfur. This annelid is a new species, and is called Alvinella pompejana, new genus and species.
